Simply Keera

I still can’t believe he’s gone. It was just a few weeks ago I was in my room jamming while he was performing on the BET Hip Hop Awards and now I’m looking at pictures of him being laid to rest. It’s crazy how life works but only God knows what he has planned of us. You really found that love Heavy because there is not greater love then the love of God. Rest in Heavenly Peace.
Dwight Arrington Myers, better known as Heavy D, died on November 8, 2011 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 44. Heavy collapsed outside of his home and was rushed to the hospital where he died from respiratory distress. On Monday, November 21 the legendary rapper was laid to rest in Mount Vernon, New York. Heavy had a star-studded send off. Celebrities such as Don King, Will and Jada Smith, Jay-Z, Queen Latifah and Usher were some of the many stars who attended his home going. Even President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama sent of letter of encouragement to the family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.”
For two and a half hours, Heavy’s life was remembered through laughter and tears by friends and family. His 11 year old daughter, Xea Myers spoke to the crowd and told that her father was “still here, not in the flesh, but in the spirit”. Rev. Al Sharpton added some humor to the day when he joked “James Brown made us black and proud; (Heavy D) made us fat and proud”.
Singer Johnny Gill, tearful as he approached the alter said a few words and sang a powerful rendition of Marvin Sapp’s song “Never Would Have Made It”. Heavy D’s nieces, also sang in tears “His Eye Is on the Sparrow”. Gospel singer Yolanda Adams and singer Anthony Hamilton also dedicated a song to the late rapper.
